The role of the pharmacist in the surgical center pharmacy

This study addresses the relevance of pharmacists' roles in surgical centers, highlighting their essential functions, such as assembling surgical kits, managing high-alert medications, and managing orthoses, prostheses, and special materials (OPMEs). Objectives: To analyze pharmacists' roles within the surgical center, emphasizing their impact on quality of care and resource management. Methods: This qualitative, exploratory literature review was conducted based on a literature review of recent and relevant scientific articles on the topic. Results: The review confirmed that pharmacists play a strategic role in preventing medication errors, reducing waste, and ensuring the economic sustainability of surgical centers. Final considerations: Pharmacists' roles in surgical centers are essential to ensuring the quality and safety of care, requiring greater recognition and investment in training to optimize hospital processes and outcomes.
