Introduction: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic, progressive, and multifactorial condition characterized by cartilage degeneration, synovial inflammation, and functional limitation, being one of the leading causes of disability among older adults.
Objective: To analyze the effects of physical exercise in the treatment of osteoarthritis, emphasizing its contribution to pain reduction, improved functionality, and quality of life.
Methodology: This is a bibliographic review based on articles published between 2020 and 2025, retrieved from PubMed, SciELO, and BIREME databases. Randomized clinical trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses addressing osteoarthritis and physical exercise were included.
Conclusion: Supervised exercise programs, particularly kinesiotherapy, muscle strengthening, and aerobic activities, promote pain reduction and functional improvement. It is concluded that physical exercise represents the main conservative strategy in osteoarthritis management, providing significant clinical benefits and reducing the social and economic impact of the disease.
